Making a difference Faith Foundation started about 4 years back as a personal journey to give something back to the community from which we so abundantly receive. The idea was simple, with no concrete programme or project; it was all about spending some time with children and young adults who spent most of their lives in adversities beyond our imagination. To begin with we had about 10 children all of whom were rag pickers in and around Vasant Vihar and mainly Basant Lok – Priya Cinema Complex. We started with inter personal exchanges and provision of some nutritious food for these children. During these exchanges we found that the children were extremely eager to learn, draw, and create. In a few days time it became a regular weekend project stretching over Saturday and Sunday morning. A routine class would include 1 hr 30 mins of study and extra curricular activities followed by their enthusiastic tales of their lives and some problem solving including medical aspects, ending with a balanced meal. As time went by the number of children increased and so did their various needs. We started breaking them into need-based groups to give proper care and attention. As of today the number has to about 75 children. Though a normal class would see between 50-52 of these kids as 25% of them in transition due to their IDP status. In a single session mathematics, English and a vernacular is taught to the children. Then there are special sessions for communication and social skills like story telling where children learn to express themselves with confidence, group sessions where they learn to work in teams and also develop some leadership qualities. From time to time activities such as arts and crafts are also there to help bring out the creativity of the children. For example we have had a class where children made photo frames for own photographs, made their own holi colours, painted diyas, transferred their dreams into paintings. A picnic, a magic show, a cricket match and a movie screening was organised as part of fun and team building exercise. That apart, at every festive occasion – Rakhi, Diwali, Eid or Christmas a special party with a meal and gifts is organised to share the festivities.
